A group of Bloom college students, 2019

“We have more than enough reasons to thank God for all we have been able to do. The sponsorship programme is highly appreciated by our Community. Please pass our thanks to Mr. Edmuud and all the members of the Foundation. We pray that the programme will continue for years to come and motivate our pupils to perform better and have hope in life.”

—Anne Muchoki, Head Mistress at ‘Our’ School

Student Sponsorship

Beginning in 2010 - our first year of facilitating secondary school sponsorships saw 15 boys and girls sent to boarding schools. Since that time, we have provided more than 200 children with sponsored secondary education (many of whom are shown in the above photo of some of our college and university students)! This year, we have entered 28 into boarding schools… 17 of those boys and girls are still in need of sponsors for their four years of education.

Each year, following the results of the children’s K.C.P.E. (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) exams that determine their ability to attend Secondary School, we seek sponsors for the next four critical years of their education.  We truly believe that their lives and the lives of their families depend on their ability to attend high school!

It is important to know, that the Kenya government does not pay for Secondary Education - they provide schools, but fees must be paid to attend them. Very few of the children at our school in Kenya are able to move on without our help, as the majority are well below the poverty level - many come from single parent families and some are orphaned.

All of our children deserve the chance to blossom. We at Bloom Where Planted, are very proud of these young people and look forward to seeing them become the doctors, lawyers, pilots, engineers, secretaries, nurses, teachers, etc. that they dream of achieving.

Why boarding school?

We feel strongly that it gives the Kenyan child a nurturing, academic environment — they are guaranteed adequate food, electric light to study by, no family pressures to do other work and the all-round competitive and social skills needed for their future life.

What is means to be a sponsor of a student:

  • 4 year commitment - Sponsorships can be shared!

  • Yearly fees range between $850 - 1050 per year depending on the selected school.

    • For the first year, additional fees ranging from $125 - 285 apply for one-time costs of uniforms, supplies, trunk for belongings, sleepwear, linens, etc.

  • Annual costs for replacement of worn and outgrown shoes and uniforms. Plus, books and supplies

  • Field trip costs - varies based on each school.

Additional suggested contributions from each sponsor:

  • Personal letter of encouragement! We suggest you write to your student as often as you can, but especially after term results to encourage them to work to achieve more in the next term.

    • Including family photographs gives the student a better idea of who is sponsoring them — it makes all the difference. They take such actions very personally and love to think of their sponsors as ‘parent’.

  • A gift at Christmas and/or find out when their birthday is and send a card or little gift.

    • Books are wonderful, as it is not something they would usually own.

  • Please do not send cash without discussing it with us first.

  • Some sponsors have chosen to start a college fund.

    • Their college education will also cost MUCH less than in the U.S. — (approx. $1,000 - $2,000 a year at this time).  If you feel they are doing well in school and you want to give them even more hope, this is a wonderful way to do it.

    • The fund should be held in your local bank, or ours here, under the name of the child and yourself. This will be returned to you if the child does not choose or is not able to attend college or university.

Requirements of each sponsored student:

  • At the end of each term, each student will provide their scores to our Student Liaison, who then passes them on to us.

  • Regular letter correspondence with photographs to their sponsor.

  • They are instructed not to ask for monetary gifts. If they have pressing needs, they are to notify us and we will discuss it with you.

  • Each student is made aware of how fortunate they are to be given this ‘gift’ of education and that it is a responsibility to be taken seriously. This gift requires them to work hard at their studies and to lead a full academic and extra-curricular life in their school in order to make the most of their time there.

  • College/University students ‘give back’ by participating in ‘Bloom Academy’ during their long breaks. This includes tutoring Secondary students and working on improvement projects at their former primary school.
