‘Our School’

in Kenya

When we first took a Rose Tree Cottage touring group on Safari in September of 2003, we visited a school in Kenya of fewer than 200 children, finding them in great need. It was without doors, windows or floors.

We found we could not leave it behind… the school and the children remained in our hearts and required our attention. That school is now ‘Our School’.`

From making building improvements — under the guidance of our friend ‘on the ground’, Tony Church — it has become a full time, full spectrum education mission.

Having established Bloom Where Planted as a 501(c)(3) U.S Public Charity, we not only work to provide a better learning environment for students, but we also provide school supplies, books, clothing, shoes and more.

We are all driven by the same passion — to encourage children to “Bloom where they are planted” — to thrive, bloom and be good citizens in their own country.

Our Rose Tree Cottage African Children’s Foundation is now firmly established and enables us to be of even more help and assistance to the dear children in “our adopted school” who have been affected by problems, both new and old, in Kenya.

Join the 93 Club!

93 Children graduated from our primary school last year. That is…

93 Faces, 93 Stories, 93 Opportunities to change their world!  One child at a time!

Without your help...

Girls would have to stop their schooling at age 14 and possibly be forced to marry. Boys may have to turn to begging or even the poaching of wildlife to earn money.

With your help, OUR GOAL...

is to see that each child in this class of 93 can attend Secondary School for further education or a Trade School to learn a skill and be lifted out of poverty.

EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE!

We are asking you to join ‘The 93 Club’ by donating $80 a month (or $1,000) for the benefit of the 93 children in need!  This sacrifice provides an OPPORTUNITY to change and secure a Kenyan child’s future for a lifetime.

To date, we have raised $90,000 of the $93,000 Goal!

“Before ‘Bloom Where Planted’ came to our school, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as Secondary School.  Most girls were taken out of school after grade 4 and married off.  Then you came and I saw a chance to go on!”

Student Sponsorship

Our student sponsorship program started in 2010 when we sent 15 boys and girls to boarding schools. For this 2021-22 school year, we entered 28 children into secondary schools — at this time sponsors are needed for 16 of these students!

Each year, following the results of the children’s exams that determine their ability to attend secondary school, we seek sponsors for the next four critical years of their education.

The Kenya government does not pay for secondary education — they provide public schools, but fees must be paid to attend them. As the children at ‘our school’ in Kenya are able to move on without our help.

$20.21 | The Kenya School Building Fund

2021 was the year we began a building fund campaign for our school in Kenya. With the Kenyan government making much needed changes in the primary school curriculum in adding home sciences, it is exactly the right time!

Funds donated and identified for that purpose will go toward the structural work on the ‘Hall’ as a Skill Center, as well as towards a building extension for a computer classroom and library. Thanks to one wonderful friend/donor who is in Kenya at this time, the library portion has begun!

We are asking for $20.21 per month for 1 year - to help us reach our goal of $25,000.

Books That Benefit

We have put together a collection of life lessons learned from our Kenyan teachers, friends and even the students themselves, derived from their various tribal cultures, illustrated by eight talented young people we sponsor in secondary schools and college, as well as a young lady photographer!

This book is intended to showcase the talents of our more artistic students and share them with the world.

Each soft cover book is $14.95, and 100% of the profits of all book sales go towards the artistic endeavors of these children.

Soap-Aid & Food-Aid

When COVID began, in our first year of ‘SOAP-AID!, over 600 bars of soap made their way in our shipment to Kenya, thanks to wonderful donors!  With the monetary donations, we also were able to supply soap to each family of our primary and secondary school students.

In addition, the COVID-19 Pandemic sent our secondary students home from school for 9 months, adding pressure to their parents (who were also unemployed due to COVID).  Therefore, we saw the need to furnish monthly food parcels with staples to get them through.  Some families are still struggling with food deprivation, meaning we continue to furnish staple items where needed.

“We have more than enough reasons to thank God for all we have been able to do. The Bloom Where Planted sponsorship program is highly appreciated by our Community. Please pass our thanks to Mr. Edmund and all the members of the Foundation. We pray that the program will continue for years to come and motivate our pupils to perform better and have hope in life.”

- Mrs. Anne Muchoki, Head Mistress at ‘Our’ School
